To ensure that everything fits in the end, you should work exactly when measuring the camper mattress. In this step-by-step guide, we explain how you determine the correct dimensions.

Step 1: Get tools ready

To have everything at hand when measuring, you should first prepare the tools. You need a tape measure, a pencil, a sheet of paper and scissors. Then you can get started.

Step 2: Prepare vehicle

Create the space in the vehicle for the new mattress. Old cushions must be removed before you start measuring.

Step 3: Decide on the mattress format

Motorhome mattresses do not always have a rectangular format. Consider in advance which mattress format best suits your motorhome interior and plan recesses for furniture and fixtures if necessary. Do you need a folding mattress? Think about a concept for folding the mattress.

Step 4: Determine basic dimensions

Now you need to measure the camper mattress. Note the length and width of the lying surface.

Step 5: Determine recesses and radii

After you've measured the basic dimensions of your RV mattress, measurements for cutouts, rounded corners or other special shapes follow.

Tip for radii: Measure out your radius easily by determining the side lengths of the rounding. The length from the beginning of the rounding to the end point of the (recessed) mattress edge is your radius.

Step 6: Check and cut

To check your measurements, you can transfer the measurements to a piece of cardboard or cardboard and cut it to size. This way you can make sure you haven't mismeasured.

Wasserabweisend und atmungsaktiv

Eine Camping Matratze sollte wasserabweisend und besonders atmungsaktiv sein. Denn im Camper finden Schlafen, Duschen, Kochen und vieles mehr auf engem Raum statt und es kann sich mehr Feuchtigkeit bilden als in einem herkömmlichen Schlafzimmer. Deshalb sind gutes Lüften von Wohnwagen und Matratze unerlässlich – egal, wie gut die Matratze ist!

Klappmechanismus

Zudem solltest du darauf achten, dass die Matratze einfach zu handhaben ist (dabei hilft ein Klappmechanismus), damit sie leicht bewegt und tagsüber verstaut werden kann.

Raumgewicht

Zuletzt sollte die Qualität nicht zu kurz kommen: Denn eine Wohnmobil Matratze ist mehr Strapazen ausgesetzt als eine herkömmliche Matratze. Das wichtigste Qualitätsmerkmal einer Matratze ist das Raumgewicht. Sie gibt an, wie viel Kilogramm Rohstoff in einem Kubikmeter Schaumstoff verarbeitet wurden. Dabei gilt: Je höher das Raumgewicht, desto widerstandsfähiger und langlebiger ist die Matratze. 40kg/m3 sind für das Campen ideal, da deine Matratze auch möglichst leicht sein soll.

Wusstest du schon? Der zweite Wert der Schaumstoffklassen gibt die Stauchhärte an. HR4030 steht bspw. für eine 30kPa Stauchhärte. Damit bestimmst du den Härtegrad des Schaumstoffes.

A camping mattress should be water-repellent and especially breathable. Because in the camper, sleeping, showering, cooking and much more takes place in a confined space and more moisture can form than in a conventional bedroom. Therefore, good airing of the camper and mattress are essential - no matter how good the mattress is!

Folding mechanism

In addition, you should make sure that the mattress is easy to handle (a folding mechanism helps with this) so that it can be easily moved and stowed away during the day.

Space weight

Finally, the quality should not be neglected: Because a camper mattress is exposed to more stress than a conventional mattress. The most important quality feature of a mattress is its density. It indicates how many kilograms of raw material have been processed into one cubic meter of foam. The higher the density, the more resistant and durable the mattress. 40kg/m3 is ideal for camping, as your mattress should also be as light as possible.

Did you know? The second value of the foam classes indicates the compression hardness. HR4030, for example, stands for a 30kPa compression hardness. This is how you determine the hardness level of the foam.

Can I also cut my own motorhome mattress after measuring it?

This is not recommended. A mattress is a high-quality product that is manufactured in several steps. The mattress core is encased in a cover, which then needs to be sewn. So, unlike insulation materials, for example, you can't just put on the cutter knife and get started yourself; you need to be able to sew. The safer way is to measure the space for your RV mattress and send the dimensions to a specialized mattress manufacturer like Vanmade. We will then custom make the mattress for you.

Can I return the Vanmade mattress if I misjudged the space for the RV mattress?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. Since our camper mattresses are custom-made, they are excluded from exchange. You should measure the camper mattress so follow our instructions exactly, so that everything fits in the end.
